Immortals and NRG Depart: What’s Next for the Americas League?
Sep-18-2024
As the world of League of Legends esports evolves, substantial transformations are looming on the frontier. The upcoming merger of the LCS, CBLOL, and LLA to form a new multi-regional Americas League, likely featuring North and South conferences, has already led to shifts within existing teams. Two organizations are now leaving the competitive scene.
Immortals' departure isn’t all that surprising. The team has struggled over the past few seasons, failing to make a significant impact in the league. With ongoing challenges and the hefty investments from more successful organizations, stepping away now seems like a sensible decision. While their exit means the loss of a long-time competitor, staying stuck in mediocrity isn't sustainable in today’s fierce competitive environment.
On the other hand, NRG’s exit comes as a shock. After re-entering the scene by taking over CLG’s spot in 2023, they quickly won the LCS championship and delivered one of North America’s strongest international performances. Leaving so soon after such success raises questions about the team’s future plans.
This leaves six North American teams set to join the new league: Dignitas, Cloud9, FlyQuest, Team Liquid, Shopify Rebellion and 100 Thieves. However, it’s worth mentioning that 100 Thieves may also be considering an exit as they undergo a restructuring phase and explore the possibility of selling their franchise slot.
As these changes continue to unfold, it’s important to remain cautious. Official confirmation about the participating teams for 2025 will come from Riot Games, so until then, speculation will continue within the esports community.
